I have been on the Anthropologie bandwagon for a long time. While it’s not some place I shop too often, I do love scouring the store for ideas of things I could make myself. As it usually happens, a couple of months after my last Anthropologie excursion I came across a pair of ceramic mugs while thrift hunting that sparked my imagination. They were too cute to pass up at only $1 a piece and I knew the clean sides and simple design would be perfect for drawing on. I went over several pattern ideas in my head but I kept coming back to this pretty floral pattern I saw last time I was at Anthropologie.
To make your own, all you need is a couple of ceramic mugs and an oil-based Sharpie paint pen. I just free-handed the design on each one, waited for them to dry, and then popped them in the oven for a couple hours to bake. Super easy! Note: make sure you use the oil-based paint Sharpies and not regular Sharpies or you might have trouble with your design rubbing off in the wash.
Oil based Sharpie paint pen
- Draw any pattern you choose onto your mugs. It comes in handy when working with such quick-drying paint to keep some Q-tips and some rubbing alcohol on hand in case you make a mistake. Simply soak the tip of a Q-tip in rubbing alcohol and use it to wipe away the error. Then dry off the mug.
- All your design to dry for at least 24 hours.
- Bake at 250 degrees for 2.5 hours.
- Wash by hand in cold water with gentle soap to keep your design from washing off.
Pssst. Don't feel like making your own? This item is now available in the shop.
