I believe gardening is about as DIY as it gets. There’s something so romantic about it, in an old school, Into the Wild sort of way (minus the poisonous berries, obviously). Who hasn’t, at one time or another, dreamed of Thoreau’ing it all away (ya see what I did there?) and secluding oneself to a cabin in the woods. Or at the very least, finding a plot of land to stick one’s feet into.
Then I came across Ron Finley. He’s pioneering a movement across South Central LA he calls Gangsta Gardening. One by one he reclaims empty and abandoned lots and turns them into lush, self-sufficient ecosystems that help feed the local community. While guerilla gardening is nothing new, Finley is single handedly helping to make it more mainstream and healing a community in the process.
